Obituary of Orlena Boyle

On Saturday, August 18, 2018, Orlena Marie (Lynn) Boyle, 96, went home to be with her Lord. She had been a resident at the Reformed Presbyterian Home, Pittsburgh, PA, for many years.

Orlena was born on January 15, 1922 in Sparta, IL, to the late Thomas and Marguerite Lynn. The family moved to Gary, IN, where she graduated from Lew Wallace High School. She completed two years at Gary College and finished her education at Indiana University where she graduated in 1943 with a degree in mathematics.

She had a keen interest in being a missionary to China; however WW 2 was at its peak, so this was impossible. Later the Reformed Presbyterian Church Home Mission Board asked her to go as a missionary to serve in its outreach in Sandy Hook, KY, to which Orlena agreed. After the end of the war, she was appointed by the mission board to go to China and this was realized in 1948. Unfortunately the time in China was cut short due to the Communist takeover in 1949 requiring all foreigners to leave. After a year and a half stay in Hong Kong, Orlena was led to become involved in the newly opened work in Japan. She remained in Japan as a missionary and a Christian bookstore manager until her retirement in 1990.

In January of 1992 she married Sam Boyle, who had been a fellow missionary in both China and Japan. Sam was 86 and Orlena was just shy of her 70th birthday. The couple moved to the Reformed Presbyterian Home in 2000 where they remained together until Sam’s death in 2002.

In a reflection on her life at the Reformed Presbyterian Home, Orlena whimsically noted, “In Japan I climbed Mt. Fuji and Mt. Aso, now all I do is sit around at the Reformed Presbyterian Home, reading books and taking naps.” Orlena was a follower of Christ all her life and it was her desire that others know her Lord too. She firmly believed that we are not our own, but were bought with a great cost by the sacrifice of Christ’s death for us on the cross. She believed that we are created for a reason and that is to follow God’s purpose in our lives. One of her favorite Bible verses and a life motto was, “Commit your way to the Lord; Trust in him and he will do this (Ps. 37:5).

In addition to her parents and her husband, Orlena was preceeded in death by her sister, Ruth Tanner. Survivors include five step-children, Scott Boyle, Margaret Uniacke, Patricia Boyle, Christine Welsh and Bill Boyle, spouses, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
