Obituary of Leroy Karsten
Leroy H. Karsten, 85, of Marissa, IL, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at his residence. He was born in Campbell Hill, IL on December 10, 1932 to Harry G. and Hulda (Fischer) Karsten.
Leroy graduated Sparta High School in 1950. He then joined the Illinois National Guard in May of 1951, Unit NG US, Co. D, 135 Combat Engineers, 44th INF Division. He served in the Korean War from December 1952 to August 1953
Leroy married Jvonne R. Runge on April 13, 1952 at Camp Cooke, CA. They established their residence in Chester, IL in 1953. He was employed at Illinois Power Company for 22 years beginning in 1953. Then he was employed at First National Bank for 22 years beginning in 1976. When he retired, Leroy enjoyed cruising, hunting, and leisure living. Leroy was past president of the Sparta PTA, past Treasurer of Randolph Red Cross, past Chairman of Sparta Zoning Board, past Commander and member of the Legion Post 396, Member of the VFW Post 2698, Eagles Aerie 3252. Leroy was a Member of the First Methodist Church in Sparta for 41 years and member of Friedens United Church of Christ Church in Marissa for 13 years.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Marlene L. Rippelmeyer Vogel Karsten who he married on July 31, 2004; one Sister Doretta Karsten Alms; Children, Tenley (Steve) Smith, Kimberly (Glenn) Naeger, and Toby (Carma) Karsten; one sister-in-law Donna Rippelmeyer; Step Children Susan Mouser and Scott Vogel; nine Grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren
Leroy is preceded in death by his first wife Jvonne Runge Karsten, parents and parents-in-law. Step daughter Susan Runge Reiman, grandchildren Melissa, Melanie and Matthew Reiman, brothers-in-law Ardell H. Alms and Darrel R. Rippelmeyer
Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Sparta, IL, with Pastor Jerry Haley and Rev. Brett Palmer officiating
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Sparta, IL, and on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at the Church
Interment with Military Honors will be at Caledonia Cemetery in Sparta, IL
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Sparta, or to the Friedens United Church of Christ in Marissa, IL
