Donald T. Outten, 91, of Sparta, IL, born on December 3, 1925 in rural Sparta, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 25, 2017.
In 1943, Don graduated from Sparta High School after which he enlisted in the Navy. A veteran of WWII, the GI Bill made it possible for him to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Southern Illinois University in 1949. He received his Masters from the University of Illinois in 1955. Spanning 57 years, his career as an educator began in a one room schoolhouse and concluded with his retirement as Superintendent of the Sparta School District in 2003. His commitment to education was appreciated by students and faculty alike and his tenure in each community that he served had a positive impact on countless young lives.
In addition to being an avid sports fan, Don enjoyed golf, boating and travel. He was active in numerous community organizations throughout his life. Don was especially proud to serve on the Sparta School Board and of helping to establish the Eden Community Historical Organization, whose primary goal was the restoration of the Eden Park. Don was blessed with wonderful friends, colleagues and extended family members and was always grateful for their presence in his life.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Lowell and Irene (Sweetin) Outten, two sisters Mary (Delbert) McIntyre and Loretta (Foster) Benjamin and a brother Neil Outten.
In 1945, Don married Janet Brelje of Steeleville, IL, who preceded him in death in 1966. Don is survived by their seven children, Connie (Tom) Miller of Nashville, IL, Teresa (Ron) Hodel of Fairview Hgts., IL, Bill (Marilyn) Outten of Troy, IL, Cathy Brakeman of Southgate, MI, Debbie (Alan) Ohms of Red Bud, IL, Steve (Theresa) Outten of Bethalto, IL, and Barbie Outten of Fairview Hgts., IL, their nine grandchildren Mike Miller, Jeremy Miller, Matthew Hodel, Nathan Hodel, Emily Lumenberg, Rebecca Outten, Kurtis Brakeman, Kelly Foucher and Greg Lashbrook, as well as seventeen great grandchildren.
In 1986, he married Helen Maddox of St. Louis, MO. She preceded him in death in 2005 and is survived by her children Lisa (Steve) Nuelle, Lori (Gary) McBride, and Chris (Lisa) Maddox, and seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
