Helen Menke, 93, formerly of Sparta passed away Friday, January 26th, 2018, at Hoosier Village Retirement Center in Indianapolis, where she had lived for the past four years.
Helen Frances Watson was born in Sparta on March 25, 1924, the daughter of John Howard and Ada Florence (Lawson) Watson. After graduating from Sparta High School in 1941, she attended a business college in St. Louis. She married her high school sweetheart, Burdell G. Menke, on February 23, 1946. Together they owned and operated Menke’s Phillips 66 Service from 1947-1970, with Mrs. Menke serving as the bookkeeper. Her husband preceded her in death on September 20, 1993.
Helen was a lifelong member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She served on the Sparta Public Library Board for 35 years, most of those as the treasurer. She was a charter member of Theta Delta chapter of Delta Theta Tau and a member of the 20th Century Club. Helen was an avid reader, an accomplished bridge player and solver of crossword puzzles.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisbeth Ann (Betsy) Lewis and her husband Larry of Indianapolis, one grandson, Craig Lewis and his wife Shannon and their children Gavin and Adalyn, of Carmel, Indiana and her younger brother, Jack Watson of Sparta. Also surviving are a brother-in-law, Edward Keating, of Sun City West, Arizona and a sister-in-law, Ruby Menke, of Sparta plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, an older sister, Elizabeth Brosch, a younger sister, Patricia Keating, and in 2017, a grandson, Mark Stephen Lewis.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, February 1st at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm. Friends are invited to greet the family beginning at 12:30 pm until the time of the service. A private burial will be held prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the Sparta Public Library or to Westminster Presbyterian Church.
